Letters for July 29, 2010
La Marque Police Chief Randall Aragon and the Clean City Commission announced a litter bug crackdown that will start next week. Aragon promises anyone caught littering will go to jail and will have to pay a hefty fine.
Nice To Have Police Who Care About Trash Laws
We, the residents of La Marque, are so grateful to learn we now have a police chief who cares about the problem we have with the careless people who are tossing their trash onto our streets and lawns, causing our city to look like a third-world country.
I am looking forward to this great improvement for our great city. Thanks a million, chief.

La Marque Loves Stephen Tobleman
In regard to the police officer stopping Stephen Tobleman (“There’s nothing sinister about walking,” The Daily News, July 22), I’ll bet the officer was a new recruit.
Nearly everyone in La Marque knows and loves Stephen Tobleman. In the old days, when we still had The La Marque Times, an article was in the paper honoring Stephen Tobleman as an outstanding citizen.
Where is our freedom to walk our own streets without being harassed? I am 81 years old, and I hope all our freedoms aren’t being lost. God help us.

Don’t Forget To Take Your Keys
How appropriate that on July 20, the Galveston County Auto Crimes Task Force successfully arrested suspects associated with an ATV and UTV theft ring during Texas Watch Your Car Month.
Vehicle theft is the costliest property crime in the country, costing consumers in excess of $6.4 billion each year. Economic loss from auto theft in Texas totaled $825 million in 2008, with a theft occurring every six minutes — a number that rises during the hot summer months.
According to Charles Caldwell, director of the Texas Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority, an estimated 50 percent of the vehicles stolen have the owner’s keys in the ignition, a situation that could be prevented easily. Don’t help the criminals. Take your keys, and lock your car.
To kick off Watch Your Car month — ABTPA task forces are conducting a coordinated statewide initiative at convenience stores and gas stations as a reminder to drivers to be mindful of car thieves. Be on the lookout for “Got Your Keys?” static window cling reminders on display throughout these and other local businesses.
Information is available at www.txwatchyourcar.com, by calling 512-374-5101, or via Facebook and Twitter.

Vandals Hurting Disabled Residents
I have been a Galvestonian for about 48 years. This is my home. I have seen the good and the bad throughout the years. I have gone through heartache like everyone else because of Hurricane Ike.
I have another heartache because of vandalism of my 16-year-old car. Within the past six months, I’ve had my tires slashed five times and my windshield broken. I am trying to survive on a small disability check. I have spent almost $800 fixing the damage to my car and have had to take out loans. I can’t afford another used car.
I use my car to get groceries, make local doctor visits and visit my grandchildren. As it is now, I have to park my car blocks away and walk home at night. I can’t afford to move.
I live by the University of Texas Medical Branch, and on July 4, the vandals hit two of my neighbors’ cars. If anyone has any information, would you please contact the police? I wish I could turn back the clock 30 years. Galveston was a little safer then.
Please, Galveston, your neighbor needs help. These vandals need to be caught.
