Landscaping Doesn’t Always Require Permit
I recently received a letter from the city’s department of planning and community development stating a complaint had been received alleging I have landscaping in the right of way in front of my house.
It also said placement of landscaping within the right of way requires application for a landscaping license, a permanent license to use permit and approval through appropriate boards. After approval, there is a yearly fee.
I learned that this is incorrect. Not all landscaping requires a landscaping permit. There is no yearly fee.
I attempted to clarify statements in the letter and questioned if I required a permit under existing city code.
Wendy O’Donohoe, director of that department, now has notified me that following research, she determined that my shrubs and flowers don’t require review or a permit from the city and the city will take no further action regarding this issue.
All research into this matter should’ve been conducted before sending out letters.
In light of recent research, my advice to anyone who has received a similar letter is to call the planning department at 409-797-3660 and ask if your plantings require a permit from the city.

Voters will decide May 8 whether the Galveston Independent School District will spend $34 million on a new football stadium.
Put A Halt On The Stadium Plans
The Galveston school district wants to build a new sports stadium for about $34 million, which, of course, will mean a tax increase for the Galveston Independent School District.
What I don’t understand is why this is such a high priority when there are so many on the island struggling to find work, rebuild their homes or open their business.
I’m not against a new sports stadium, but perhaps when Galveston is stable again we can think about a $34 million facility. I urge a no vote until then.

The three council members who pushed through a contract with City Manager Eric Gage face a possible recall election for their support of the embattled city manager. The group that urged the council to delay offering Gage a contract filed affidavits to start petitions to recall council members Larry Mann, Connie Trube and Deanie Barrett.
Sam Is Looking Out For Taxpayers
In response to “Group pushes to recall three council members” (The Daily News, March 8): Please don’t recall the three council members.
We need to be sure they stay in La Marque so they never move to Baytown and run for city council here.
In another note, it certainly appears that the mayor, Geraldine Sam, is looking out for the taxpayers of La Marque.

Why Are Gasoline Prices Rising?
In response to “Refiners facing tough times” (The Daily News, Feb. 28): What am I missing here?
“Texas City refineries continue to suffer due to the recession and decreased demand for fuels.”
What does that tell you? Tanks must be full to the brim. So refineries should slow down production.
If we have so much gasoline on hand, why in the heck does the price for gas keep going up?

80th Birthday Celebration Appreciated
My name is Dorothy Cunningham, and I wanted to personally and publicly thank my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church family, the Rev. E.R. Johnson and the Avenue L Missionary Baptist Church for helping me celebrate my 80th birthday Feb. 27 at the Nessler Center in Texas City.
It just goes to show you that there are still nice people in our community — but even when they’re nice, they don’t have to be nice to you. I just wanted to express my appreciation in words so that all who were involved will know how grateful I am to each and every one of you.
